What is a Security Clearance?
Working with classified information or on classified projects requires a clearance.
In Australia, access to classified government and military information is governed by the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), a strict multi-agency governance structure that ensures only trustworthy individuals can access information classified as Protected, Secret, or Top Secret.
There are four clearance levels:
Baseline
Access to Protected information
Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1)
Access to Secret information
Negative Vetting Level 2 (NV2)
Access to Top Secret Information
TS-PA (Top-Secret Privileged Access)

The Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) assesses and grants Baseline, NV1, and NV2 clearances. Individuals cannot apply for or purchase a clearance independently. Applicants must be sponsored through the Department of Defence’s Defence Industry Security Program (DISP).
